" Lots of work to do in my business now" Jodi Porteous, Northwest Accountancy

“In March 2009 I attended a two day seminar run by the Westpac Bank called “Beyond Survival” It was one of the best investments I ever made as a business owner. I think the best part of the seminar was the constant experience of doing the real calculations with figures given to us. I found that it demystified the figures you get from your accountant and gave participants a clear picture of the bank’s requirements when assessing a business to approve loans for expansion etc. Most importantly it gave me tools to be able to fully understand the financial part of my business and to make appropriate and successful changes based on hard cold figures. It was actually good fun too!  I would recommend it to any small business owner.”Fatima RebolaGibson (past owner of Karratha Florist)

SMALL BUSINESS SOLUTIONS®

Small Business Solutions® is a program which enables small business owners to access personalised one-on-one business mentoring in the workplace, from experienced small business professionals.

It recognizes the skills small business owners already have, identifies any gaps and gives support on how to drive solutions that will improve their skills and the business.

While traditional business coaching services are widely available, they are financially prohibitive to most small businesses. They are also notoriously unpredictable, varying greatly with regards to quality of advice and services provided.  Small Business Solutions® is government-subsidised so it can provide a flexible and value for money service, and the advisors have a proven track record in owning and managing successful small businesses of their own.

Unlike any program of its kind, Small Business Solutions® not only gives mentoring, but offers the opportunity to gain qualifications and training through Skills Recognition towards a qualification in business.

The Small Business Solutions® program is designed to offer the business owner or manager short, sharp, focused blocks of dedicated time and support from the advisor.

Depending on the specific business needs, an advisor can visit the workplace weekly, fortnightly or monthly as required.

….”I can highly recommend this program to get you focused on goal setting, analysing your company and planning for the future based on real information gathered from within your business.

We had a fairly good idea of what we had to do but did not know how to begin or glean the information required. Our association with Small Business Solutions® has provided us with the tools to get started"    Ewan McAllister, TRACWEST, Wangara

BUSINESS ADVISORS

The Small Business Solutions® program is all about finding solutions to problems for owners and operators, providing strategic support to identify areas for improvement and offering practical advice based on experience.

The key to achieving this is the on-site and on-going involvement of Business Skills Advisors.   This critical ingredient is what we believe has made Small Business Solutions® program so successful.

Business Skills Advisors provide support in the workplace by listening to owners, understanding their situations, and by offering practical down-to-earth solutions for better workplace outcomes.

Business advisors with the Small Business Training Institute either own, or have owned, their own successful small business and are well experienced in the issues facing small business owners.  They can directly relate to small business – from hospitality to retail – to trades and professional services, transportation and service manufacturing.

The Business Skills Advisors will conduct a business ”health check” which will assist in diagnosing how well the business is performing and will provide assistance with strategies to take the organisation to the next level.

As the program also offers the opportunity for business owners to gain qualifications and training through Skills Recognition towards a qualification in business, business advisors are given training in assessment through the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Business advisors are employed by SBTI on a contract or casual basis as required and are paid by SBTI.

THE BUSINESS HEALTH CHECK

As the first step, the business advisor and the client advisor complete a ‘Business Health Check’. This fundamental process aims to ‘diagnose’ the overall performance of the business as well as the specific skills which may need building upon.

The  ‘Business Health Check’ will provide an objective assessment of the business including strengths and development needs. It will also give an understanding of the future stability and growth potential of the industry.

Once the Business Health Check' is complete, the  advisor and the business owner  are now in an informed position to commence the coaching process. This is where the advisor will help to identify key business issues requiring attention, develop strategies and find solutions.

The advisor will be able to assist with a complete range of small business issues, including (but not limited to):

Cash Flow

Business & Financial Planning

Marketing Strategy

Staff Retention

Customer Service

Quality Control

Skills Recognition & Training

Growth, marketing development & export

SKILLS RECOGNITION

Skills Recognition allows the business owner to have their business skills and knowledge converted into a formal qualification.

Through The Small Business Training Institute and TrainingWA the business owner may be provided with formal accreditation of their skills and knowledge, no matter how, when or where the learning occurred.

Skills Recognition can be used to achieve full or part qualifications and can be used to identify what further training may be needed to get a qualification.

Having skills recognised makes good business sense. By having existing skills formally recognised, the business may also be able to:

Improve business reputation

Engage a greater variety of work and expand to new markets

Retain an edge over competitors
